Discover some of London’s most interesting secrets

We spent a week in London exploring the city known for its rich history and vibrant culture, looking for adventure and a few of it’s most interesting secret places. Beyond the famous landmarks and bustling streets, there are some hidden gems that promise unique and surprising experiences. Discover some of London’s most interesting secrets below.

1. Leake Street Tunnel

The Leake Street Tunnel (aka Banksy Tunnel) is an ever-evolving display of incredible graffiti art in the heart of London. Just a short 3-minute walk from the Thames River and London Eye, this roadway tunnel that runs under the tracks of Waterloo Station has become an outlet for the pent-up creative urges of street artists throughout the city. Christened in May 2008 during the Cans Festival, organized by Banksy himself, this roadway was closed to road traffic a few months later and has become a living canvas for the city ever since. During the festival, Banksy created a few stencil pieces himself and encouraged others to follow his lead. Even though graffiti is against UK law on public property, local authorities permitted the tunnel to become a “safe-haven.” When we visited in April, we found a thriving community with several artists actively working on new pieces and even came across a family in white coveralls working on their own wall art under the guidance of a tour guide…a quick search of Viator actually provided me with an excursion if you’re interested in making your own graffiti tag! It’s become a bit commercial all these years later…there’s a collection of bar/restaurants called Leake Street Arches, but still keeping a level of authenticity for the diehards. It was a great secret diversion from the usual mass market tourist attractions in London and an excellent place for a secret rendezvous.

2. God’s Own Junkyard

Tucked away in a nondescript industrial estate in Walthamstow, God’s Own Junkyard is a kaleidoscope of color and light. As you step through the unassuming entrance, you’re greeted by an explosion of neon signs and vintage displays that saturate the room with a dazzling array of hues. The vibrant glow of reds, blues, and greens reflects off every surface, creating an almost otherworldly ambiance.

The faint hum of electricity and the occasional buzz from flickering lights add to the sensory overload. As you explore, the scent of freshly brewed coffee from the on-site café mingles with the tang of metallic components, grounding the surreal experience with comforting familiarity. Every corner reveals a new visual delight, from cheeky slogans to iconic symbols, each with its own story and history.

3. The Roof Gardens at 120 Fenchurch Street

Rising above the urban sprawl, the Roof Gardens at 120 Fenchurch Street offer a serene escape with breathtaking panoramic views of London. As the elevator doors open onto the rooftop, the fresh, crisp air fills your lungs, and the soft rustle of leaves greets your ears.

The garden’s lush greenery contrasts beautifully with the sleek, modern lines of the surrounding skyscrapers. Strolling along the pathways, the fragrant aroma of blooming flowers and herbs is a delightful contrast to the city’s typical scents. Benches strategically placed amid the foliage invite you to sit and soak in the sights. The distant sound of city life below is a gentle reminder of your elevated sanctuary.

The views from the garden are spectacular, offering unobstructed vistas of iconic landmarks such as the Shard, the Gherkin, and the Tower of London. The sight of these historic and contemporary structures juxtaposed against each other is a visual feast that encapsulates the essence of London.

4. The Whispering Gallery at St. Paul’s Cathedral

Stepping into St. Paul’s Cathedral, the grandeur of its soaring dome and intricate mosaics immediately captures your gaze. But to uncover a hidden marvel, ascend the 257 steps to the Whispering Gallery. As you enter this circular walkway, the cool, smooth stone beneath your feet contrasts with the warm, filtered sunlight streaming through stained glass windows.

Whisper softly against the wall, and you’ll hear your words travel along the curve of the dome to a listener on the opposite side. The sensation of your voice magically carrying across the space, almost as if transported on invisible threads, is both eerie and enchanting. The gentle murmur of other visitors testing the phenomenon creates a hushed symphony that envelops the gallery, adding to the mystical atmosphere.
